Time-dependent changes in serum 3α-androstanediol glucuronide correlate with hirsutism scores after ovarian suppression

1995

The clinical utility of serum 3 alpha-androstanediol glucuronide level has been controversial. Among the concerns regarding its lack of utility has been the finding that suppression of serum 3 alpha-androstanediol glucuronide does not occur readily with treatment. We hypothesized that because the treatment of hirsutism requires a prolonged duration, a longer observation period is required for changes in serum 3 alpha-androstanediol glucuronide to be measured. Therefore, we studied the clinical and hormonal changes in 11 women treated for hirsutism with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH-a) for 1 year. A progressive reduction in Ferriman-Gallwey scores occurred, which was signifi…

Interdisciplinary treatment of diabetic foot wounds in the elderly : Low risk of amputations and mortality and good chance of being mobile with good …

2016

Aims: A major proportion of patients with diabetic foot syndrome are older than 65 years. Little is known about outcomes of these elderly patients. Methods: We analysed 245 treatment cases in an observational single-centre study for comorbidities and outcomes over a 6-month period. Results: In all, 122 patients had peripheral arterial disease which was significantly increasing with age ( n = 245, df = 1, χ2 = 23.06, p ⩽ 0.0001). Increasing age correlated positively with decreasing rate of revascularisations ( n = 122, df = 1, χ2 = 4.23, p = 0.039). In total, 23 (9.3%) patients died in the observation period. In-hospital mortality was 2.8%, percentage of major amputations 2.8%. In the invasi…

A preliminary study on the stability of benzodiazepines in blood and plasma stored at 4 degrees C.

1997

An approach to determine the stability of benzodiazepines and some of their metabolites (n = 13) by means of a routinely applied gas chromatographic method using electron capture detection was made in this preliminary study. Validation data of the method are given. Spiked blood and plasma samples were stored at 4 degrees C and analysed at selected times up to 240 days. The concentrations of all analytes had decreased to at least 60% of the original levels at the end of the observation period. A clear pattern of breakdown could not be established. The data obtained suggest that results from long-term stored samples should be interpreted cautiously. Further investigations concerning the stabi…

EEG-Befunde bei ALL-Patienten 10 Jahre nach Bestrahlung und Zytostatikatherapie

1990

35 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia were studied electroencephalographically during a period of 5 to 10 years (median 9 years) after diagnosis. During this time 51% of the patients intermittently showed changes in the background activity, which may indicate discrete CNS-lesions. All but one patient, suffering from an intracerebral hemorrhage, had normal EEGs at the end of the individual observation period.

Revisited Roles of Drosophila Female Pheromones

2005

All tests involved a pair of 5-day-old male and female (intact or decapitated) flies. Females were ‘homotypic’ (same species and strain as the tested male: D. melanogaster, Cs strain; D. mauritiana, 163.1 strain; D. simulans, Seychelles strain), ‘desat1 non-perfumed’ (D. melanogaster desat1 mutant), ‘perfumed’ (desat1 with transfer of Cs females pheromones), or ‘Cs’ (D. melanogaster control strain). Data shown are the frequencies of courtship (with both intact and decapitated females) and of mating (with intact females), within a 1 h observation period and were calculated from the total number of tested pairs (shown in brackets). D. mauritiana males courted (χ2 = 16.81, P < 0.001) and mated…

Updated 24-year trend of Type 1 diabetes incidence in children in Poland reveals a sinusoidal pattern and sustained increase

2017

AIMS To present the incidence trend for Type 1 diabetes in Polish children aged 0-14 years, updated using data collected during 2005-2012, and assess the reliability of the predictive model constructed previously using the 1989-2004 database. METHODS Children aged < 15 years with newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetes are recorded prospectively (EURODIAB criteria) in several regional registers in Poland. Age- and gender-standardized incidence rates for Type 1 diabetes were calculated per 100 000 persons/year. Incidence rates were analysed in terms of the dependency on age, gender, geographical region and population density. Incidence rate trends over time were modelled using generalized linear mod…

HAPEX-Sahel

1997

The variation in evaporative fraction and actual evaporation is examined for three sample days in the HAPEX-Sahel Intensive Observation Period (IOP), including data from all the vegetation types and sites. The trends in evaporative fraction over the IOP are also presented for eight sites. The high rate of evaporation from bare soil in the days following rainfall produces a variability in evaporation which makes differences between sites difficult to interpret on a day-to-day basis, but over the whole IOP it is shown that the millet uses a smaller proportion of the available energy for evaporation than the tiger bush or fallow savannah. The combined effect of differences in the total energy …

Effect of different cryosurgical protocols using liquid nitrogen on bone tissue: a histomorphological analyze

2011

The aim of the present experimental study was to evaluate the morphological effects of different liquid nitrogen cryosurgery protocols on bone tissue. The femoral diaphyses of 42 Wistar rats were exposed to three local and sequential applications of liquid nitrogen for 1 or 2 min, intercalated with periods of 5 min of passive thawing. The animals were sacrificed after 1, 2, 4 and 12 weeks and the specimens obtained were processed and analyzed histomorphologically. Histologically, an increase in bone necrosis was observed for the two protocols in the second week after cryotherapy. A significant osteogenic phase was observed after 4 weeks. Moreover, complete remodeling process was encountered…

Perinatal Database in Germany

1995

By collecting standardized data from up to 600,000 deliveries per year in Germany a nation-wide database has been established in recent years enabling not only regional and overregional quality control, but also the scientific analysis of rare maternal and fetal complication. During the observation period of 10 years the understanding of perinatal risk factors has considerably improved and the perinatal mortality has declined from 9.4 to 6.4 (per 1,000 deliveries). From the huge amount of calculations typical results are presented.

Sex and sexual ornamentation associated with survival of the cyprinid fish, Rutilus rutilus, under disease stress

2013

By conveying information of disease resistance, sexual signals may be used as cues for adaptive mate choice. Here we report observations on survival of laboratory-maintained, wild-collected, sexually mature, ready-to-spawn cyprinid fish, Rutilus rutilus (roach), under accidental epidemic attributed to Flavobacterium psychrophilum, diagnosed using species-specific PCR. The fish were maintained in a single tank. During the 27 days observation period, both the proportion of fish surviving the infection as well as the length-adjusted mean survival time of the fish that died was the highest among the high-ornamented males with large breeding tubercles, intermediary among the low-ornamented males…
